Consultation and suitability

The consultation considers skin excess, fat distribution, muscle bands and the relationship between the neck and jawline. Previous surgery, general health and the changes you would consider worthwhile help determine whether surgery is suitable.

An individual consultation considers your concerns, medical history, previous treatment and the trade-offs of surgery. Bring relevant reports and a list of medicines and supplements. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice from your treating team.

Options and the operation

Treatment may involve surgery under general anaesthesia, with incisions behind the ears and sometimes beneath the chin. Depending on the assessment, treatment may involve the platysma, excess fat and redraping or removing skin. Hospital arrangements depend on the planned operation.

Recovery and return to activity

Swelling and bruising take time to settle. A support garment may be advised. Wound care, activity restrictions and follow-up are discussed for the particular operation; the final contour should not be judged during the early swollen period.

Your return to work, driving and exercise depends on the extent of treatment, the demands of your activities and how healing progresses. Follow the instructions given for your own operation. Individual suitability, recovery and outcomes vary.

Scars, risks and limitations

Scars may lie around the ears and beneath the chin, depending on the approach. Scars remain permanent even when placed in less conspicuous positions. Ageing continues after surgery.

Risks include bleeding or haematoma, infection, delayed wound healing, skin loss, altered sensation, persistent pain, asymmetry and unfavourable scars. Nerve injury can cause weakness, including weakness of the lower lip. Anaesthetic complications and blood clots are additional risks. Revision may be needed.

This is an overview rather than a complete consent discussion. Surgery cannot promise a particular appearance or complete symmetry, and further treatment may sometimes be needed.

Frequently asked questions

Does every neck lift use the same technique?

No. Skin, fat and muscle changes differ, and the proposed treatment should match the assessment.

How long does recovery take?

Swelling and activity restrictions vary. Your work and home circumstances should be discussed before scheduling surgery.
