Blepharoplasty in Melbourne

Blepharoplasty is surgery to the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both. Dr Brian Yue assesses excess eyelid skin and other eyelid concerns in Melbourne, including situations where upper-lid skin affects vision.

Consultation and suitability

The consultation considers the upper and lower lids separately, your symptoms and your goals. Tell Dr Yue about eye conditions, previous eye surgery, dry eyes or problems with vision. An eye assessment or further investigation may be appropriate before deciding on surgery.

An individual consultation considers your concerns, medical history, previous treatment and the trade-offs of surgery. Bring relevant reports and a list of medicines and supplements. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice from your treating team.

Options and the operation

Treatment can involve removing or repositioning selected skin, muscle or fat. The incision and technique depend on which lids require treatment and the amount of tissue involved. Treatment may involve local anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia, with the plan tailored to the operation.

Recovery and return to activity

Bruising, swelling and temporary irritation can occur. You will receive instructions about eye care, wound care and follow-up. The timing of work, contact lenses, swimming and exercise needs to reflect your procedure and recovery.

Your return to work, driving and exercise depends on the extent of treatment, the demands of your activities and how healing progresses. Follow the instructions given for your own operation. Individual suitability, recovery and outcomes vary.

Scars, risks and limitations

Incisions are planned with the natural eyelid contours where possible. They still leave permanent scars, and healing cannot be predicted precisely.

Risks include bleeding, infection, dry eyes, difficulty closing the eyes, lower-lid pulling or outward turning, altered sensation, persistent pain and the need for further surgery. Changes in vision can occur; permanent visual loss is a very rare but serious complication. Seek urgent medical attention for sudden visual change or severe eye pain.

This is an overview rather than a complete consent discussion. Surgery cannot promise a particular appearance or complete symmetry, and further treatment may sometimes be needed.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need both upper and lower eyelid surgery?

Each area is assessed separately. Treatment is based on the problem identified rather than a standard combination.

Will surgery remove every line around my eyes?

Eyelid surgery has limits and does not address every cause of lines or changes around the eyes.
