Gynaecomastia surgery addresses enlarged male breast tissue. Treatment can involve fat, glandular tissue, excess skin or a combination. Dr Brian Yue assesses the cause of the concern and the options for changing chest contour.

Consultation and suitability

The consultation considers the amount and distribution of tissue, skin excess, asymmetry and your goals. Medicines, health history and changes in breast size or symptoms should be discussed. A new or unexplained breast lump should be assessed before a cosmetic treatment plan is assumed.

An individual consultation considers your concerns, medical history, previous treatment and the trade-offs of surgery. Bring relevant reports and a list of medicines and supplements. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice from your treating team.

Options and the operation

Treatment may involve liposuction for selected fatty enlargement, removal of glandular tissue through an incision near the areola, and combined tissue or skin removal where needed. Surgery may be performed under general anaesthesia. The operation and hospital arrangements depend on the assessment.

Recovery and return to activity

Bruising, swelling and discomfort can occur. A compression vest may be recommended, and the chest needs protection from strenuous activity during healing. Return to upper-body exercise should be agreed with the surgical team.

Your return to work, driving and exercise depends on the extent of treatment, the demands of your activities and how healing progresses. Follow the instructions given for your own operation. Individual suitability, recovery and outcomes vary.

Scars, risks and limitations

Scars depend on whether treatment uses liposuction, glandular excision or skin removal. Some contour difference between the sides can remain, and the final result takes time to assess.

Risks include bleeding or haematoma, fluid collection, infection, delayed wound healing, altered nipple or breast sensation, irregular contours, asymmetry and prominent scars. Anaesthetic complications and blood clots can occur. Revision may be required.

This is an overview rather than a complete consent discussion. Surgery cannot promise a particular appearance or complete symmetry, and further treatment may sometimes be needed.

Frequently asked questions

Is liposuction enough for everyone?

No. Glandular tissue or excess skin may require a different or combined approach.

Where will my scars be?

Their location depends on which tissues need treatment. This should be discussed with the proposed operation.
