Liposuction in Melbourne
Liposuction, also described as liposculpture, removes selected deposits of fat to change contour. It is not a weight-loss treatment. Assessment may consider treatment of areas such as the abdomen, flanks and chest.
Consultation and suitability
Assessment considers the distribution of fat, skin quality, health and the scale of change you are seeking. Loose skin may limit what fat removal alone can achieve. Liposuction may be considered alone or as part of another operation where appropriate.
An individual consultation considers your concerns, medical history, previous treatment and the trade-offs of surgery. Bring relevant reports and a list of medicines and supplements. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice from your treating team.
Options and the operation
Treatment may involve small incisions, infiltration of a tumescent solution and removal of fat with a cannula. General anaesthesia or local anaesthesia with sedation may be used according to the plan.
Recovery and return to activity
Bruising, swelling and soreness can affect the treated areas. A compression garment may be recommended. Swelling can obscure the contour during early recovery, and the timing of activity should follow your individual instructions.
Your return to work, driving and exercise depends on the extent of treatment, the demands of your activities and how healing progresses. Follow the instructions given for your own operation. Individual suitability, recovery and outcomes vary.
Scars, risks and limitations
The access incisions leave permanent scars. Liposuction does not remove excess skin and cannot promise smooth skin, complete symmetry or a specific amount of size reduction.
Risks include bleeding, infection, fluid accumulation, altered sensation, uneven contours, pigmentation changes, loose or rippled skin and further surgery. Damage to deeper structures, blood clots and anaesthetic complications are less common but important risks.
This is an overview rather than a complete consent discussion. Surgery cannot promise a particular appearance or complete symmetry, and further treatment may sometimes be needed.
Frequently asked questions
Is liposculpture different from liposuction?
The terms are often used to describe removal of fat with attention to contour. Ask which specific technique is proposed for you.
Will liposuction tighten loose skin?
Skin response varies. If skin excess is the main problem, an excisional procedure may be discussed instead.
