Breast implant revision in Melbourne
Breast implant revision can involve replacement, removal or correction of a problem with an existing implant. Dr Brian Yue assesses implant-related concerns in Melbourne and discusses options according to the reason for revision and the condition of the breast tissues.
Consultation and suitability
Reasons for assessment include hardening around an implant, suspected rupture, displacement, asymmetry, visible rippling or a wish to change or remove implants. Previous operation reports, implant details and relevant imaging are useful. New breast changes need assessment rather than an assumption that they are purely cosmetic.
An individual consultation considers your concerns, medical history, previous treatment and the trade-offs of surgery. Bring relevant reports and a list of medicines and supplements. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice from your treating team.
Options and the operation
Options may include implant exchange, adjustment of the implant pocket, capsule surgery or removal without replacement. The extent of capsule treatment is an individual decision. A lift or staged procedure may need separate discussion. Surgery may be performed under general anaesthesia; the hospital plan depends on its extent.
Recovery and return to activity
Recovery depends on the procedures performed and the condition of the tissues from earlier surgery. Swelling, dressings and a support bra may be part of recovery. Further surgery does not follow one fixed recovery schedule.
Your return to work, driving and exercise depends on the extent of treatment, the demands of your activities and how healing progresses. Follow the instructions given for your own operation. Individual suitability, recovery and outcomes vary.
Scars, risks and limitations
Existing incisions may sometimes be used, but new or longer scars may be needed. Removal changes breast volume and can leave loose skin or an altered shape. Neither replacement nor removal guarantees a particular result.
Risks include bleeding, fluid collections, infection, poor healing, altered breast or nipple sensation, asymmetry, persistent pain and further surgery. Anaesthetic complications and blood clots can occur. New implants carry ongoing implant-related risks, including rupture, capsular contracture and rare implant-associated malignancies.
This is an overview rather than a complete consent discussion. Surgery cannot promise a particular appearance or complete symmetry, and further treatment may sometimes be needed.
Frequently asked questions
Must removed implants be replaced?
No. Removal without replacement is one of the options, with its own effects on breast shape.
Is the same capsule operation needed for everyone?
No. The reason for revision and the findings guide the discussion; the extent of capsule surgery must be individually justified.
