Body lift after weight loss

Loose skin may extend around the waist, flanks and back rather than stopping at the front of the abdomen. A body lift may be considered for this broader pattern after significant weight loss. Dr Brian Yue assesses the distribution of excess skin and whether the additional extent of surgery is justified.

What is a body lift?

A circumferential abdominoplasty or lower body lift removes a band of excess skin and tissue around the lower trunk. It may address the abdomen, sides and lower back, with an effect on the buttock and outer-thigh contour. It leaves a permanent scar continuing around the body.

An upper body lift is different: it addresses excess skin across the upper back, sides and bra-line region. Neither operation removes loose skin from every part of the body.

Body lift or abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty mainly treats the abdomen. An extended design may address skin that continues towards the flanks. A lower body lift may be considered when the excess extends further around the back. A fleur-de-lis design addresses a different direction of laxity by adding a vertical abdominal scar.

The amount of weight lost does not determine the operation by itself. Skin distribution, remaining fat, previous scars, abdominal wall findings, tissue quality and your priorities guide the discussion. Liposuction cannot replace removal of substantial loose skin.

Consultation and preparation

Assessment includes your weight history and stability, nutrition, medical conditions, medicines, nicotine exposure and previous abdominal or back surgery. You can discuss the areas that trouble you without first choosing a surgical technique.

Planning may involve your weight-management team, particularly where bariatric surgery or nutritional deficiencies affect preparation. Further weight loss, pregnancy plans or medical concerns may be reasons to defer surgery. Choosing no operation remains an option.

The operation and recovery

A lower body lift is substantial surgery, generally involving general anaesthesia and hospital care. The design, need for abdominal wall repair or liposuction, use of drains and anticipated hospital stay depend on the individual plan.

The circumferential wound affects sitting, lying and moving during early recovery. Arrange help with household tasks and lifting. Dressings, movement, compression and wound care should follow your own postoperative instructions. Return to work, driving and exercise varies with the extent of surgery, your role and healing.

Combining other operations increases the overall demands of surgery and recovery. A staged approach may be more appropriate than treating several body regions together.

Scars, risks and limitations

The scar is long and permanent. It may widen, become raised or remain visible despite careful planning. A body lift cannot guarantee symmetry, a particular contour or complete removal of stretch marks. Remaining laxity and further changes with ageing or weight fluctuation are possible.

Risks include bleeding, infection, seroma, delayed wound healing or wound separation, tissue loss, altered sensation, persistent pain, contour irregularities and further surgery. Blood clots and anaesthetic complications are potentially serious. Nutrition, nicotine exposure, general health and surgical extent affect risk.

After surgery, seek prompt advice for worsening pain, fever, spreading redness, wound changes or new leg swelling. Chest pain, breathlessness or collapse requires emergency assessment; call 000 in an emergency.

Frequently asked questions

Does a lower body lift replace a thigh lift?

No. It may affect the outer-thigh contour but does not reliably treat substantial inner-thigh excess. A separate thigh assessment is needed.

Can I have a body lift, arm lift and breast surgery together?

Sometimes procedures can be combined, but the total operation and practical recovery may favour staging. A consultation is needed to judge what is proportionate to your health and priorities.
