Trigger finger surgery in Melbourne
Dr Brian Yue treats trigger finger and trigger thumb in Melbourne. These conditions occur when a flexor tendon has difficulty gliding through the pulley system, producing pain, catching or locking. Some patients also develop stiffness that remains even after the catching is treated.
Catching or locking of a finger
I assess the tendon movement, joint stiffness and whether there is another problem, such as Dupuytren disease or arthritis. The treatment should address the source of restriction rather than assuming all difficulty straightening a finger has the same cause.
Treatment options
Options can include modification of aggravating tasks, splinting or a corticosteroid injection. Persistent locking, recurrence or an inadequate response may lead to discussion of release surgery. The operation releases the constricting pulley to improve tendon glide. Additional procedures are considered only when the examination and findings justify them.
Recovery and risks
Gentle movement is usually encouraged following an uncomplicated release. Scar tenderness, swelling and pre-existing stiffness may take longer to settle than the mechanical catching. Risks include infection, nerve or tendon injury, persistent symptoms, stiffness, scar sensitivity and, rarely, problems with tendon support.
Return to work depends on wound healing and the amount of gripping or manual effort required. We discuss modified duties separately from unrestricted use. An established joint contracture may need hand therapy and may not fully correct with release alone.
